April 21 marked the anniversary of the passing of Pope Francis, and Buenos Aires commemorated the occasion on a grand scale. The city hosted Masses, public demonstrations, gatherings, and an electronic music event in Plaza de Mayo, headlined by DJ priest Guilherme Peixoto. Held in the political and symbolic heart of Buenos Aires, the large-scale gathering brought together diverse audiences, intersected different ways of inhabiting public space, and raised questions about the changing forms of belief, celebration, and belonging in contemporary societies. A cheerful group of sociologists, anthropologists, and communication scholars specializing in the study of religion conducted ethnographic fieldwork both in Plaza de Mayo and across social media platforms. Here, we offer a series of reflections, field observations, and guiding questions.
